A série se inicia no passado onde o mestre das trevas chamado Aku (no Brasil é chamado de Abu), causou muita destruição e sofrimento para a humanidade na época, mas havia uma família de grandes guerreiros que possui uma espada mágica, a única arma que pode deter Aku. Após uma épica batalha entre o imperador e Aku, este é aprisionado pelo poder da espada. Muitos anos se passaram e Aku conseguiu se libertar e voltou para se vingar do imperador e levar destruição para o mundo novamente.
